Naked raku

The black and white pieces were my first foray into decorative pieces, and into raku in particular. Although I am now exploring a variety of glazes, I continue to play with naked raku as I am still amazed by its endless potential for representing light and darkness, and everything else in between.

The light and shadow comes from the contrast of the bare material and the effect created by the smoke. Like cloud formations, each person can see something different in them, and something different every time. Stoneware can be its own glaze, and the result is sometimes reminiscent of ancient rupestrian art.
